A Satellite-derived Uv Radiation Climatology over Europe Available for Impact Studies: Daily Maps from January
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper briefly presents a methodology for mapping surface UV radiation that uses a radiative transfer model and satellite data to quantify the influencing factors. TOMS, TOVS and GOME data are used for the total column ozone. The cloud optical thickness is estimated using METEOSAT/MVIRI data. Other influencing factors taken into account include tropospheric aerosols, snow cover and surface elevation. The resulting products are maps of surface dose rates and daily doses, covering Europe with a spatial resolution of 0.05 deg. On this basis, it has been undertaken to build a European UV climatology, with the purpose of supporting impact studies on the environment and human health. As of today, the data set covers the period from January 1 1984 to October 31 2002. A comparison between the satellite estimates and the measurements in Ispra is briefly presented. Finally, examples of how the climatological data set can document the geographical distribution and year-to-year variability in surface UV radiation are presented.

Variability of the total ozone trend over Europe for the period 1950–2004 derived from reconstructed data
Abstract. The total ozone data over Europe are available for only few ground-based stations in the pre-satellite era disallowing examination of the spatial trend variability over the whole continent. A need of having gridded ozone data for a trend analysis and input to radiative transfer models stimulated a reconstruction of the daily ozone values since January 1950. Description of the reconstr...
متن کاملUltraviolet climatology over Argentina
[1] Satellite-derived climatologies of UV index (UVI) and erythemal daily dose were determined for Argentina at a geographical resolution of 0.5 latitude by 0.5 longitude. Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer climatology of key input parameters was used to calculate the clear-sky ground-level solar UV irradiance. NASA Surface meteorology and Solar Energy cloud cover data were used to determine the ...
متن کاملEvaluation of solar ultraviolet radiation in Zanjan city using the ultraviolet index
Background and Objective: Monitoring the amount of ultraviolet radiation from sunlight can provide a basis for assessing people's exposure, raise public awareness and warn people against this radiation. Measuring the sun's ultraviolet index over a working period is an accurate choice to achieve this goal. Materials and Methods: In this study, the amount of solar UV index in one of the outdoor ...
متن کاملA method to generate near real time UV-Index maps of Austria
A method is presented that combines individual ground based ultraviolet (UV) measurements from the Austrian UVB monitoring network and area-wide data of the distribution of clouds derived from satellite images to generate a UV-Index map all over the region. The Austrian UVB Monitoring network provides near real time ground based 5 measurements of surface UV irradiance from fifteen selected loca...
متن کاملGlobal Mapping of Underwater Uv Irradiances and Dna- Weighted Exposures Using Toms and Seawifs Data Products
The global stratospheric ozone-layer depletion results in an increase in biologically harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the surface and penetrating to ecologically significant depths in natural waters. Such an increase can be estimated on a global scale by combining satellite estimates of UV irradiance at the ocean surface from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) satellite ins...
